The teaser trailer for Edgar Wright’s first film since 2017’s Baby Driver is here, and it’s a masterpiece of atmosphere, mood, and revealing very little. On the other hand, it could be revealing a lot of things, but it’s edited in a way that makes the whole thing feel like a bad dream: disconnected shots of eerie reflections; poor wide-eyed Thomasin McKenzie apparently having a very bad day or days; neon light; oddly threatening performances; mysterious hallways; and a brooding, ominous Matt Smith. (This man’s face was made for brooding.) Edgar Wright wants to invite me on a journey? I’m in.
Here’s all we get to know for now:
Edgar Wright’s psychological thriller about a young girl, passionate in fashion design, who is mysteriously able to enter the 1960s where she encounters her idol, a dazzling wannabe singer. But 1960s London is not what it appears, and time seems to fall apart with shady consequences…
So in theory we have time travel and people who are able to break through floorboards with their arms, but it’s a “psychological thriller,” not anything fantastical. In theory. Wright co-wrote this screenplay with Krysty Wilson-Cairns (who is also working with Taika Waititi on his Star Wars film), and his Extremely Edgar Wright Cast includes McKenzie, Smith, Anya Taylor-Joy, Smoke & Bone‘s Jessie Mei Li, Diana “Tell Cersei it was me” Rigg, Terence “Chancellor Valorum” Stamp, and the Weasley twins.
I have absolutely no idea what’s going on in this film, and I love it. Last Night in Soho will be in theaters this October.
